We recently reached out to 24 parents and grandparents to gather their top suggestions for making visits to “Grandma's house” easier and more enjoyable for everyone involved. The consensus was clear: the less parents have to pack and bring, the more likely they are to visit! Having these items available at your destination frees up space in your vehicle and saves time when packing and unpacking—reducing planning and stress.
Here’s what they shared:
1. Car Seats
This is especially important if the visit involves an airline flight. Having age-appropriate car seats ready for your arrival can ease a lot of travel stress. Consider utilizing a lightweight, travel-friendly option like the Cosco Scenera NEXT, which is easy to install and carry.2. Playard
A playard with an extra mattress and several sheets is essential if a full-sized crib isn’t available. For toddlers, an inflatable mattress or a removable bedside rail for toddlers can help keep little ones safe. Make sure to choose a playard that meets safety standards and is easy to set up and take down.
3. SlumberPod
This portable privacy pod is perfect for creating a dark sleeping space in any indoor environment with a playard or select inflatable mattress for a toddler. It is compact when stored so will fit easily in a dresser drawer or closet shelf when not in use. Many parents appreciate its ability to block out light, making nap time and night time sleeping easier and more flexible.
4. Video Monitor/Camera
Keeping an eye on little ones while they sleep or play is a comforting necessity for parents. Choose one with night vision features for additional convenience and peace of mind.
5. Sound Machine
Especially if used at home routinely, a sound machine can help make the sleep environment “familiar” and also helps drown out unfamiliar noises, making it easier for children (and everyone) to sleep. Check out SlumberCalm options; one includes a night light. Some models even have customizable sounds and timers.
6. Bouncer or Baby Seat
Having a seat for the baby is crucial for those moments when no one can hold them - especially if floor space is at a minimum or not an optimum choice. Look for a portable bouncer with a removable cover for easy cleaning and a lightweight design for convenience.
7. High Chair or Booster
Options like the Chicco travel highchair or the Graco Table2Table™ are great for meal times. The IKEA Junior Chair, known for its small footprint, is also recommended for toddlers, allowing them to join the adult table comfortably. Check it out here. Consider adding a fun placemat for easy cleanup.
8. Small Eating Utensils
Kids' plates, cups, and silverware are essential for meal times, such as these plates and silverware. Look for colorful, unbreakable options that are easy for little hands to grip.
9. Water Bottles
Water bottles are great to have on hand for keeping drinks handy and spill-free, such as this one by Simple Modern that comes in nearly 70 design options. Choose bottles that are easy to clean and have a straw or spout for convenience.
10. Baby bathtub
For little ones, having a baby bathtub on hand really helps make bath time routine so much easier and safer. There are several options/models from which to choose. The Grow-with-me-bath tub is safe for babies and toddlers, ensuring a comfortable bathing experience as they grow.
11. Bathtime essentials
Keeping your grandchildren’s favorite shampoo, conditioner, & body wash stocked in easy-to-use pump bottles makes bath time a breeze. Consider some bathtime toys to turn a simple bath into a fun experience!
12. Step Stool
A sturdy step stool is helpful for toddlers and small children to reach the sink or other areas safely. Look for a non-slip model that can double as a seat for added versatility.
13. Toilet Seat Reducer
Transform an adult-sized toilet seat into a cody commode for little bottoms. Consider a portable option or installing a seat like the MAYFAIR NextStep2 for ease of use, ensuring that grandparents can assist little ones comfortably.
14. Stroller
This is a must-have for outings or walks for both babies and toddlers. Colugo has a two stroller options as well as a hands-free baby carrier for newborn to 33 lbs. A compact stroller that folds easily is also a great addition for travel.
15. First Aid Kit
Be sure to have basic supplies for minor injuries or illnesses on hand, including allergy medications if needed. Include items like adhesive bandages, antiseptic wipes, and a digital thermometer for peace of mind.
16. Diaper Changing Supplies
Collect items like diapers, wipes, and rash cream in a small basket for easy access. Consider adding a portable changing pad for on-the-go convenience and easy clean-up.
17. Educational and fun toys
Having a variety of toys on hand makes visits exciting for kids. Think board games, train sets, blocks, Legos, and dolls, action figures. Special stuffies that stay at Grandma’s house are loved and cherished!
18. Selection of Books
It’s always nice to have books available, especially those that parents loved as children. Consider adding a cozy reading nook with pillows and blankets or a special rocking chair to make storytime inviting.
19. Art supplies
Have the basics available such as crayons, coloring books, and craft materials to encourage creativity. PlayDoh is always fun for toddlers and small children!
20. Outdoor activities
Have things like sidewalk chalk and water toys on hand to encourage outdoor play. If space and means are available, installing a small swing set/playhouse is a definite plus!
21. Baby proofing
Ensure safety with setting up baby gates at stairs, and installing necessary cabinet locks and outlet covers. Consider using corner guards on sharp furniture edges for added protection.
22. Online grocery orders
Some parents suggested setting up an online grocery order with familiar snacks to arrive before or when they do. This can ease the transition and ensure kids have their favorites on hand.
23. Special treats
Make memories with offering food items or treats that are unique to the grandparents’ house. It could be as simple as pancakes with chocolate chips, individual cups of ice cream, or your favorite dessert recipe. One parent noted that having a box of cereal they wouldn't normally buy was a fun surprise for their kids, creating a sense of local mythology around it!
24. Allergy considerations
Always be mindful of any allergies (food or contact) and ensure necessary medications are available. Communicate with parents ahead of time about any potential allergens in your home.
This list may be a bit overwhelming, so you can see how the parents must feel needing to pack all of this for every trip!
Grandparents, you may want to start with having some of these items on hand and build your supply as time goes by. If the grandchildren don’t visit often enough to warrant purchasing larger items, consider buying second hand (being mindful of used car seats or playards that they are up to current standards for safety), or borrow from other grandparent friends. There are also rental options in most larger cities, such as BabyQuip or Rents4Baby. You may want to consider converting a guest room or closet for all grandchild-related items, so everything is organized in one place.
By keeping these suggestions in mind, Grandma’s house can become a welcoming, joyful, and convenient space for families to gather, creating cherished memories together!
